The choice of psychological treatment (or therapy) depends on your individual needs and preferences. Individually tailored therapy combining elements from various therapies are also available for certain types of problems.
At Corfu Psychology we offer a wide range of scientifically based and clinically tested psychological treatments (or therapies). Every person is treated as an individual and your individual problem will form the basis of your tailored treatment plan.
We will periodically evaluate how well you are progressing, by using a range of measures and psychometric tests and discuss your progress with you.
At Corfu Psychology we offer the following services:
Psychotherapy is the practice of alleviating psychological distress through talking. It is often referred to as ‘talking therapy’.
Unlike treatments based on drugs that can directly affect the body’s chemistry or destroy bacteria, psychotherapy is dependent on the therapist and client working together, both to understand a client’s distress and to find ways forward suited to his or her personal circumstances and resources.
Psychologists specialising in psychotherapy work with a wide range of distress usually at the point when it is severe enough to affect a person’s well being, work, relationships or other aspects of their daily lives. It is a co-operative process.
Psychotherapists bring psychological knowledge and understanding that they can offer clients and, clients bring firsthand knowledge of their unique experience and circumstances.
Counselling is a systematic process which gives individuals an opportunity to explore, discover and clarify ways of living more resourcefully, and with a greater sense of well being. Counselling may be concerned with addressing and resolving specific problems, making decisions, coping with crisis, working through conflict, or improving relationships with others.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the most researched psychotherapy, which has been proved to be effective in the treatment of several disorders. Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies are psychological approaches which are based on scientific principles and which research has shown to be effective for a wide range of problems.
CBT helps people identify and understand problems in terms of the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. The approach usually focuses on difficulties in the here and now, and relies on you and your psychologist developing a shared view of your problems. This then leads to the identification of personalised, time-limited therapy goals and strategies, which are continually monitored and evaluated.
It is a very directive therapy which sets objectives (in collaboration with you) for you to attain. We will offer you homework assignments to help you understand your difficulties and achieve your goals. It is particularly good for treating phobias, obsessions and compulsive behaviour and can also be helpful in dealing with some sexual problems. Anxiety management and exposure therapy are particular types of behavioural therapy.
Individual psychotherapy is a confidential space devoted to exploring and illuminating your thoughts and feelings with undivided attention. It is a place to go to tell the private truth and to consider it with someone who can help you think it through, thoroughly and productively.
Couples therapy can help you tap into the truth of your feelings and communicate it to your partner in a way that is heard and understood. It is a safe and confidential way to help you directly address what is happening emotionally in your relationship.
It can help you get past the same old same old and move forward constructively. It can help you meaningfully engage and get to what counts, together.
Whether your family is in crisis, managing unspoken tension, approaching a major life transition, or simply wishing there were a way to relate to each other differently, family therapy is a resource. In a confidential setting, you can speak directly and constructively for yourselves and to each other. You can cut through resistance and avert blame. You can think, really think together about what is going on and what really matters. You can work it out to do what needs to be done for the welfare of all and without sacrificing any one.
In group therapy approximately 4-6 individuals meet face-to-face with a trained group therapist. During the group meeting time, members decide what they want to talk about. Members are encouraged to give feedback to others. Feedback includes expressing your own feelings about what someone says or does.
Interactions between group members are highly encouraged and provides each person with an opportunity to try out new ways of behaving; it also provides members with an opportunity for learning more about the way they interact with others.
It is a safe environment in which members work to establish a level of trust that allows them to talk personally and honestly.
Group members make a commitment to the group and are instructed that the content of the group sessions are confidential
